FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS SET The "OFF" side of the ratchet head is stamped with a 1930 date code, a - with a 0 symbol "-0" for 1930 on the head. Socket are marked with over-stamped date codes, a "0" date code for 1930 and an "*" for 1931, as shown in the pictures. The finish is a thin nickel plating, with slight deterioration due to wear. The walls of the 12-point broached openings have chatter marks typical of cold-broached construction, and the area below the broaching is recessed for chip removal. This is the original metal case that came with this set, and has a brass placard on the center that states "Property of Snap-On Wrench Co. Milwaukee, USA Manufacturers" underneath that it reads "Snap-On INTERCHANGEABLE Socket Wrenches" This set comes from my personal collection. This is truly a museum-quality set, I have never seen another complete and original set like it in this condition. A Brief history on Snap-On Ratchets: The first Snap-On ratchets showed up around 1925. The captive plug ratchet is a 1927-1930 era tool. During this era not all tools got date codes and sometimes the tools that did get them (like ratchets) passed through unstamped. However, most all captive plug ratchets will have No.7 forged in the handle. The patent pending notation on this ratchet corresponds to patent #1,827,202 was filed on Oct.13'th 1927 by W.R. Klein and issued in 1931 with assignment to Snap-on. This important patent formed the basis for most of the reversible ratchets produced by Snap-On. However, this ratchet was produced before the patent was issued and that is why is says "patent applied for" on the handle. These sockets (part numbers ranging from 140 through 320 in the old system) had been updated with double-hex broaching in late 1920. Snap-on catalogs of the 1930s continued to list this style of socket as a 1/2-drive DH-xxx series, yet despite being offered at least through the late 1930s, examples of this style of socket are relatively uncommon.
